Steel vs. Aluminum

One key consideration when trying to choose a trailer is what type of material you want your trailer to be built from. The two most common materials for trailer construction are aluminum and steel. Aluminum trailers tend to be lighter overall in weight than their steel counterparts. They also don’t rust, which helps to increase the lifetime of the trailer. Unfortunately, aluminum doesn't have as much strength as steel, which means you’ll need to check your trailer for cracks every once in a while. Steel is heavier than aluminum and can rust if not painted correctly, but is favored when it comes to durability.
 

Flooring

Floor support is crucial when you’re hauling heavy cargo. The heavier the cargo you carry, the more floor supports you’ll need. Many manufacturers use a cross member support center. For aluminum trailers, it’s best to cut that down by half sometimes. Some of this support can be made up for with a double-thick floor or diamond plating, but floor supports are always a better long-term solution. 
 

Axles/Roofs

Many buyers know that the more axles your trailer has, the more weight it can carry. That’s not the only consideration to make, though. The two main types of axles are leaf spring axles and torsion axles. Leaf spring axles are usually less expensive, have a higher ride height, and also ride smoother when unloaded. Torsion axles have a lower ride height with independent wheel movement. Similarly, there are two types of roofs - rounded and flat roofs. Rounded roofs are great for climates with more snow and ice because the precipitation can simply roll off the sides. They also provide a higher interior ceiling height. Flat roofs are a perfectly acceptable option, though, and if the height isn’t a problem, they can be a good way to save some money.
