History

Brothers Everette and Clinton Cushman founded their enterprise, Cushman Motor Works, in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1901. Initially, the company manufactured gasoline-powered motors. The brothers left the business in 1919 and Charles Ammon took it over. He elected to produce motorized scooters in 1936, then the first Cushman golf carts came out during the 1950s. Celebrities loved Cushman golf carts and had them customized for their games, including Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Both gas and electric golf carts were manufactured by Cushman up to 1975, when their golf cart models were retired. Following a few purchases, the company ended up with Textron Inc. in the late 1990s. A division of Textron is responsible for manufacturing Cushman utility vehicles, and you can still find many of their vintage golf carts on the market in great condition.

Models

Due to their long history, Cushman has produced many cart models that are still highly prized. One of the most iconic classic Cushman designs was their lineup of three-wheeled Meter Maid carts. These carts were utilized as municipal patrol vehicles for police who administered parking tickets in cities all across the United States for many years.

Another popular model was the Scotsman, which had a top speed of 12 miles per hour and could be modified for usage as a small dump truck. The versatility of this model increased its popularity.

The Cushman Combo allowed for four passengers to ride at one time with a flip-down seat at the rear. This seat could also be flipped up to allow for storage of golf clubs and other items if no extra room was needed for passengers.
